Awards and Scholarships

The Department awards several scholarships and academic prizes to our majors each year in order to recognize and/or reward exceptional studentship. Among these are:

AAPG Austin Weeks Research Grant 

Qualifications:

  • Junior-Senior standing
  • Participate in Independent Research project, preferably in Structures, Geology or Sedimentology-Stratigraphy
  • Active in Geology Club
  • GPA of at least 3.0

Award will be $500.00 from the American Association of Petroleum Geologists.

Harry O. Lathrop Memorial Award

Established:  1954 

Qualifications:

  • G.P.A. minimum of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale
  • 48 semester hours at ISU, including spring semester of current academic year
  • Junior-Senior standing
  • Extracurricular activities:
    • Involvement in the Geography or the Geology Club
    • Attendance of field trips
    • Attendance of professional meetings and/or field conferences
    • Presentation of student research at professional meetings
    • Publications

Stipend amount depends upon interest earned by the scholarship fund.  Historically the amount is about $300.00.

Arthur W. Watterson Undergraduate Essay Award

Established 1966/modified 2002

Qualifications:

  • Quality of Admissions essay
  • ACT score, class rank

$250 stipend awarded to at least two students.

Charlena Wallen Scholarship

Established 2003

Qualifications:

  • Academic scholarship including but not limited to: GPA, class rank, and ACT score.
  • Available monies will be evenly split between the two programs
  • Preference will be given to incoming freshmen, but all admitted students are eligible.
  • Candidates that have been awarded Presidential, Provost’s, Dean’s, or Minority Scholarships are not eligible.
  • The scholarship recipients will be selected whenever the admissions deadline is that year.
  • If the award is declined, the Awards Committee will select another candidate.

The aim of this scholarship is to attract the top candidates admitted to the Geography and Geology programs to attend Illinois State University.   $250 stipend awarded to at least two students.
