GEOMAP offers hands-on training in GIS including ArcGIS, ESRI's full featured Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software for visualizing, creating, managing and analyzing geographic data.
The increasing public awareness of environmental issues along with the rise in debates surrounding environmental and social sustainability and management has created a social and academic demand for the development and application of sciences and technologies that facilitate the capture, maintenance, visualization, and analysis of complex multi-dimensional geographic databases, including Geographic Information Systems or Science (GIS), digital cartography, remote sensing, and Global Positioning Systems (GPS).
Our mission is to support research activities that aim to improve our understanding of the complex interactions between human and natural systems and facilitate sustainable socioeconomic development through the application of state-of-the-art geospatial sciences and technologies, to promote responsible citizenship.
Our vision is to become a leader in applied geospatial analysis and mapping among public universities in the state of Illinois.
GIS combines very sophisticated computer technology and trained personnel to develop digital data models of the world around us. A GIS includes capabilities for digital data creation, the storage and retrieval of digital data, the manipulation and analysis of those data, and the presentation of data using maps, graphs, tables, reports, and other displays. Remote sensing is the science and technology of obtaining and interpreting information about objects from a distance. Remotely sensed data includes aerial photography, digital satellite imagery, radar, visible and infrared wavelengths, and other sensor-based types. Digital remotely sensed data can be manipulated, visualized, and analyzed in a GIS.
